Specific Duties:
The legislative chair will meet with the president, other officers, and the executive director to determine a direction for the legislative activities.
With the assistance of the executive director, a review of recent legislative activities shall be undertaken.
The legislative program may be divided into three segments, and the legislative chair may appoint one or more members to assist in each of the segments.
National Legislative Issues:
a. The legislative chair (and his/her committee) shall review the status of the issues that
are of current interest to the members. Close coordination with BOMA International’s Legislative Affairs Department shall be maintained to aid in this process.
b. One or more committee members may be appointed to each major issue to provide
close coordination between the local members and staff in Washington.
c. Appropriate reports shall be made to the board of directors, with recommendations for
policy direction and advocacy strategies, including personal contact of national officials,
letter campaigns, publication of articles, and other methods.
State Legislative Issues:
a. One or more committee members shall be assigned to monitor the State issues, both legislative and regulatory.
b. Participation with BOMA Florida during the legislative session is recommended.
c. Review of legislative summaries from BOMA Florida shall be made to the board of directors with recommendations for policy direction and advocacy strategies, including personal contact of national officials, letter campaigns, publication of articles, and other methods.
Local Legislative Issues:
a. One or more committee members shall be assigned to monitor the local issues, both legislative and regulatory.
b. Issues identified as important to this industry shall be more fully considered, and appropriate reports shall be made to the board of directors with recommendations for policy direction and advocacy strategies, including personal contact of national officials, letter campaigns, publication of articles, and other methods.
c. Because of the geographic growth of the association membership, the activities in many counties and municipalities should be monitored. The assistance of people working in those jurisdictions should be solicited, with an appropriate monitoring program to ensure their continued vigilance.
The legislative chair shall provide budget input to the executive director.
The legislative chair shall report to the board on progress being made in the legislative area.
The legislative chair shall undertake the development of a grass roots contact program by identifying those members who know elected and appointed officials and who would be willing to contact them on specific issues of importance to the association.
The legislative chair or his appointee shall encourage participation in advisory boards and other participatory activities to ensure that the opinions of the association members are voiced.
With the program chair, the legislative chair shall consider one or more “government affairs” programs or workshops during each year to encourage greater participation by the members with government.
Whenever possible, the legislative chair shall attend the annual convention and winter business meeting of BOMA International to participate in the meetings conducted by the government affairs department. Also as possible, the legislative chair shall participate in legislative days in Washington as conducted by BOMA International and board meetings and events associated with BOMA Florida.
Submits committee report each month for inclusion in monthly Board of Directors agenda mailing.
